Model: ABUS GameChanger 2

Tested by: Elias

Test duration: 6 months, mixed road and race conditions

Price: approx. €270

Material: In-mold polycarbonate shell with advanced EPS foam

Weight: ~230 grams (size M)

Target group: Serious road cyclists and triathletes seeking a performance-focused aero helmet

First Impressions

The ABUS GameChanger 2 makes a strong, unambiguous first impression: this is a helmet that’s all about aerodynamic performance. From the moment you unbox it, the intent is clear—every surface, vent, and contour screams “speed.” The long tail, sculpted exterior, and deep ventilation channels all suggest serious wind tunnel time. Visually, it’s aggressive—borderline intimidating—and it doesn’t try to hide its race-day DNA.

The helmet feels solid and confidence-inspiring in hand. The EPS core and outer polycarbonate shell are tightly fused, and the detailing—vent shaping, strap anchors, and adjustment dial—feels thoughtfully executed. However, at this price point, these things are expected, and ABUS delivers—but doesn't go far beyond.

A major upgrade over the original GameChanger is ventilation. Port size and placement are improved, and airflow has been reworked to provide better thermoregulation. Early rides suggest airflow is good at higher speeds, but less noticeable at low intensities or on climbs.

The retention system is minimalist and clean, with flat straps that sit flush against the face and are easy to adjust. The rear dial offers solid micro-adjustments, and the internal padding—though minimal—is soft and stays in place.

The narrow fit and aggressive styling may be polarizing. Riders with wider heads might struggle with the sizing, and the aesthetics may not appeal to those who prefer a more understated look.

Comfort & Fit

The ABUS GameChanger 2 offers a distinctly race-tuned fit—compact, close, and performance-focused. The helmet hugs the head securely, the cradle is easy to fine-tune with the rear dial, and the padding, though minimal, is strategically placed.

However, this secure fit comes with caveats. The internal shape is quite narrow, and there’s limited flexibility for broader head shapes. Riders with wider skulls may find the GameChanger 2 tight or even uncomfortable after a few hours. While it doesn’t create pressure points immediately, discomfort can build over time.

Padding is functional rather than plush. It prevents chafing and manages sweat well, but doesn’t offer much cushioning. Compared to more comfort-oriented lids, the GameChanger 2 may feel spartan.

Weight distribution is well-managed, and the helmet stays balanced and stable—even over rough roads or in aggressive riding positions. The straps lie flat and don’t irritate the skin.

For race-focused riders with narrower profiles, the fit is snug, streamlined, and secure. For others, it might feel restrictive—especially during long or hot rides.

Long-Term Impressions

After six months of use—including club rides, solo training, and race efforts—the GameChanger 2 has proven to be a reliable, race-ready helmet. Its standout feature remains the aerodynamic performance. The helmet feels planted at speed and unobtrusive in aggressive positions.

Ventilation, while improved over its predecessor, still doesn’t match the best ventilated helmets on the market. On hot days or slow climbs, it can feel warm. It's serviceable for most use cases, but not ideal in extreme heat or during prolonged efforts.

Cosmetic wear on helmet Cosmetic damage on helmet after hot day out

In terms of durability, the structure is solid and has shown no functional issues. However, the finish is prone to cosmetic wear. Small scuffs and scratches show up quickly—even with careful handling. The strap ends have also begun to fray slightly. While this doesn’t affect performance, it detracts from the premium feel expected at this price point.

The fit system and padding have held up well. Sweat absorption is decent, the pads dry quickly, and no unpleasant odors or hygiene issues have appeared so far.

🥭 Sweet / 🍋 Sour – Conclusion

  • Aerodynamic Gains: Smooth shape and aggressive tail offer real-world watt savings.

  • Stable Fit: Excellent retention system; no movement during intense efforts.

  • Race-Ready Design: Fast looks and performance to match.

🍋 Sour

  • Premium Price, Modest Finish: Shows wear quickly; cosmetic longevity doesn’t match the price.

  • Narrow Fit: Unforgiving for riders with wider heads.

  • Ventilation Ceiling: Still not ideal in extreme heat or at low speeds.

  • Competitive Alternatives: Other helmets offer similar performance with better all-round usability.

Verdict

Overall rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (3.8/5)

The ABUS GameChanger 2 is a compelling aero helmet for serious cyclists who value speed and structure above all else. It offers a secure fit, aerodynamic efficiency, and a modern design—but not without compromises. Riders with broader heads or a preference for plush comfort may be better served elsewhere.

Recommended for: Competitive road cyclists and triathletes with narrower heads, looking for an aero helmet with solid ventilation and a race-focused design.
